While the median age may skew older, there are definitely younger people/young families. I make under $40K a year and can afford everything just fine, so I promise you’ll be good at $88K! COL is very cheap in comparison to Dallas.
Cheers and potentially welcome to Roanoke. me and I will happily share my thoughts with you.

I often find myself having to travel to Richmond, Charlotte, or D.C. The only thing that to me goes hand in hand with this is the music scene if you like anything other than blue grass and jam bands, is pretty bad. My opinion on this might be a bit biased because my BF lives in Richmond and I go there all the time, but I really have never felt isolated. I've never felt that isolated here, the only thing I did wish we had closer is Ikea(which ironically I'm going to Hampton, VA for this weekend). As others have mentioned while the city trends blue the outside areas are incredibly conservative, and that trickles into certain lifestyle aspects and the broader community here. I love it here and think its a phenomenal place, but I think you might need to be aware of that, I imagine coming from Dallas that will be a culture shock.Īs for acceptance, for the most part especially in the city most people are incredibly accepting but there are certain places I wouldn't be caught dead bringing my boyfriend. There really isn't a giant community of gay guys our age, you will find tons of young gays in the colleges around here18-21 year olds and a larger population of gays in a different part of their life 35+ but in our actual age range of young professionals there is like 20 of us. I will let you form your own judgements about the implications behind that.
I've found, especially on this subreddit, people who aren't LGBTQ+ don't understand the size of that community here+ constantly make it out to be bigger than it actually is. Hey I will comment on what I can from my point of view. If any of you would like to meet up and chat, I'd be extremely grateful! I'm going to be visiting in about 6 weeks, after I get my COVID shots. Is anyone in a WFH/remote in Roanoke? Have you ever had to search for another online/remote job maybe in Richmond? If you can't tell, this is my biggest concern. My job is open to me working remotely and keeping my salary. I am already looking at houses in the Hollins and Cave Spring areas, but I am open to any spot within 30 min from downtown Roanoke and Salem that provides decent internet options, since that is critical to my job. Glo Fiber is moving into the area bringing great fiber speeds for cheap. "Hey dummy, have you even researched?" I feel like I have. Do you ever feel you *have* to travel that far to get something done? Contracting/shopping/new cars/etc Y'all are real far from most major cities. Will I fit in? I'm 25 and Roanoke average age is older, married, white, straight.all things I am not. Dating? Pride culture? Utilities/Internet? I'm sure there are big city amenities that that I don't even realize are just big city things. I'm also more moderate to liberal on most things and that's yet another wedge between me and the people I wanna live with! Do you think this would be a problem? I am gay and I'm worried about that will come between me and forming a real community/connection in a new city. My 108k Dallas dollars translates to 88k Roanoke dollars, factoring in cost of living, but does anyone feel like that is the norm? I just don't get the feeling that Roanoke has a competitive job market. Everything that I've heard is just so what I want, but I have a few lingering concerns. So far, can I just say, I'm really leaning towards moving to Roanoke. Hi there! Upfront, thank you for reading this.
